Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club announced Friday that Jordy Bellerive has been named the 26th Captain in franchise history.
Bellerive, 18, takes over from Giorgio Estephan who was traded earlier this week. The North Vancouver, BC product was drafted by the Hurricanes second overall in the 2014 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. Bellerive has served as an Alternate Captain for each of the last two seasons. So far this season, the Pittsburgh Penguins prospect has recorded 54 points (24g-30a) along with 44 penalty minutes. In 174 career games, Bellerive has totaled 146 points (62g-84a) along with 205 penalty minutes.
“It was an easy decision to name Jordy Captain. He’s been one of our leaders for a couple of years now,” said Hurricanes Head Coach Brent Kisio. “He’s a great leader and works hard on and off the ice and he approaches the game as a pro. As a coach, he’s the type of leader you want and as a player he’s the type of player you’d want as well.”
Joining Bellerive in the leadership group include Igor Merezhko and Tate Olson who will be full-time Alternate Captains as well as Zane Franklin and Ty Prefontaine who will alternate as Alternate Captains.
The Hurricanes return to action tonight when they travel to Red Deer to face the Rebels before welcoming the Kootenay Ice to the ENMAX Centre on Saturday. Tickets for the game can be purchased online, by calling 403-329-SEAT (7328) or by visiting the ENMAX Centre Ticket Centre.
