Bellerive Nets Hat-Trick; Canes Beat Oil Kings 3-2
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes had a late game surge en route to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings at the ENMAX Centre on Saturday night.
The Hurricanes, who came out firing in the first period on Friday, didn’t have the same jump on Saturday. Edmonton kept the ‘Canes to the outside in the first period as they only registered five shots on Todd Scott. The Oil Kings opened the scoring after an icing against the ‘Canes as Brett Kemp stole the puck, moved in and snapped it by Reece Klassen to make it 1-0 Edmonton after twenty minutes. Edmonton sent 10 shots on goal in the first period.
Edmonton carried on their stingy play in the second period as they outshot the Hurricanes 9-8 in the middle frame. Oil Kings added to their lead as Trey Fix-Wolansky snuck one by Klassen to put Edmonton up by a pair just 5:36 into the middle frame. The ‘Canes had three power play opportunities in the second period but couldn’t solve Scott as the Oil Kings led 2-0 after forty minutes of play.
The ‘Canes continued to spin their wheels early in the third period before finding their game late in the game. With a power play, Lethbridge ended Scott’s shutout bid as Jordy Bellerive banged home his 35th of the season with 4:44 left in the game to get the ‘Canes on the board; Brad Morrison and Taylor Ross earned the helpers. Just 1:59 later, Bellerive redirected a Ty Prefontaine point shot home to tie the game 2-2; Egor Zudilov earned the second assist. Before regulation was up, on another power play Bellerive completed the natural hat-trick potting the game-winning goal and his team-leading 37th of the year with just one minute left in the game snapping it home; Morrison and Calen Addison assisted on the goal. For Bellerive, it was his second WHL hat-trick as he scored three goals in a span of 3:44 to help the ‘Canes to the 3-2 win.
The Hurricanes outshot the Oil Kings 17-8 in the third period and 30-27 in the game. Lethbridge went 2/6 on the power play and 3/3 on the penalty kill.
Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #15 Jordy Bellerive (3 goals)
2) Oil Kings – #27 Trey Fix-Wolanski (1 goal)
3) ‘Canes – #10 Egor Zudilov (1 assist)
The win for the Hurricanes improves their record to 3-17-2-0 when trailing after two periods of play this season; they are 2-0-1-0 in their last three when behind after forty minutes. The ‘Canes improve to 25-21-6-0 overall on the season.
The Hurricanes will begin a three-game road trip next Friday as they travel to Moose Jaw to face the Warriors. The trip will include games against the Regina Pats and Kootenay Ice. Lethbridge will return home to the ENMAX Centre Tuesday, February 13th when they host the Tri-City Americans. Tickets for that game can be purchased online, by calling 403-329-SEAT (7328) or by visiting the ENMAX Centre Ticket Centre.
