Boulet family drops the puck for organ donation

Lethbridge, AB – Lethbridge Hurricanes honour Logan Boulet in the series “RE/MAX presents: WHL suits up with Don Cherry to promote organ donation”

“Logan made a decision to donate and we are building on his wish,” says Bernie Boulet about this new chapter in the lives of Toby and Bernie Boulet. Their son Logan lost his life in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash last April. Just prior to the crash Logan shared with his parents his desire to donate his organs. Logan inspired more than 100,000 Canadians to register their intent to donate in a national tide of support now widely known as ‘The Logan Boulet Effect’.

Toby, Bernie and Mariko, Logan’s sister, will drop the puck on Friday, February 22, 2019 when the Lethbridge Hurricanes face off at home against the Medicine Hat Tigers.

“It helps us to talk about Logan, and we are fortunate that people want to hear about him,” says Bernie. When the Boulet family drops the puck, they will be wearing one-of-a-kind jerseys honouring Logan with #LB27 on the sleeves, “The Logan Boulet Effect” on the inside of the collar, and his hockey nickname “Bouls” across their backs. The Hurricanes team will also wear those special Don Cherry-themed jerseys with each player’s nickname across the back. The jerseys will be auctioned off online with all proceeds going to the Kidney Foundation of Canada (Southern Alberta) for organ donation.

“It is an honour to host the Boulet family and help shine a spotlight on organ donation,” says Terry Huisman, GM of Business Operations, Lethbridge Hurricanes. “We are thrilled to be taking part in the second year of this special series, with the generous support of RE/MAX and the Cherry family.”

“It is a privilege to gather for this historic game to honour Logan,” says Joyce Van Deurzen, Executive Director, Kidney Foundation (Southern Alberta & Saskatchewan). “He will be in our hearts as we stand with the Boulets to advance the cause of organ donation. We are deeply grateful for their courage in the face of such a profound loss.”

Wiping away tears, Toby says, “some become organ donors when they pass away alone on the highway in the dark with no one ever knowing them. Logan represents them. He wasn’t a spotlight guy, and it really hits us how big this has become,” he says. “We want people to have the kitchen table talk with their family about organ donation. Even more important than registering to donate, have that talk. We know firsthand how important that is.”

The first 1,000 fans at the game will receive a one-of-a-kind Don Cherry bobblehead with his dog Blue. Fans are invited to visit the Kidney Foundation booth for information on organ donation, free drink koozies from RE/MAX, and to take pictures with the Don Cherry cutout. They can also buy raffle tickets to win a Hurricanes jersey signed by Don Cherry. The online auction of players’ jerseys goes live on Feb 22 at http://bit.ly/organdonationjersey. Fans are encouraged to dress up in their best Don Cherry outfit for the game.

Tickets for Friday’s game are available online at http://bit.ly/canessuitup, by calling 403.329.SEAT (7328) or by visiting the ENMAX Centre Ticket Centre.
