Broncos Top 3 Stun Hurricanes

Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes kicked off a season long seven game home-stand Friday night with a 6-4 loss to the Swift Current Broncos at the ENMAX Centre.

It was a strong first period for the Hurricanes who outshot the Broncos 8-6 early in the opening period. The ‘Canes had some good early looks to open the scoring but Swift Current’s goaltender Logan Flodell was strong to keep the game scoreless. Broncos opened the scoring at the 14:05 mark on a delayed penalty as Sahvan Khaira snapped home his second of the season to make it 1-1. The lead latest just 54 seconds as the ‘Canes equalized as Jordy Bellerive scored his fifth of the year on a bouncing puck off the end wall – Ryan Vandervlis and Jadon Joseph picked up the assists. Swift Current re-took the lead with 42 second left in the first period as Tyler Steenbergen moved in left side and beat Stuart Skinner with a perfect shot to make it 2-1 Swift Current after twenty minutes.

The Broncos broke things open early in the second period. Aleksi Heponiemi struck on the power play at the 4:25 mark to make it 3-1. Swift Current made it a 4-1 lead as Steenbergen scored his second of the night and 18th of the season just 2:31 later. The ‘Canes cut into the lead as Dylan Cozens was sprung on a breakaway and was able to snap one by Flodell to make it 4-2 – for Cozens it’s his fifth of the season; Calen Addison picked up the lone assist on the goal. Another power play goal however by Steenbergen in the final minute by the Broncos made it 5-2 as Steenbergen completed the hat-trick as Swift Current led by three after two periods. Broncos led the shots 11-8 in the middle frame.

Hurricanes back-up goaltender Reece Klassen made his first appearance as he replaced Skinner to start the third period; Klassen stopped seven of eight shots he faced. The Hurricanes pulled back within two midway through the third period as Zane Franklin scored for the second consecutive game as he beat Flodell high over the glove with a power play goal at the 8:52 mark – Brennan Riddle and Igor Merezhko picked up the assists. Steenbergen scored his fourth goal of the game and 20th of the season with just 4:22 left in the game. Bellerive rounded out the scoring with 49 seconds left in the game for his second of the night to make it a 6-4 final.

The Hurricanes outshot the Broncos 19-8 in the third period and 35-25 in the game. The ‘Canes were 2/3 on the power play while Swift Current was 2/3.

The Hurricanes fall to 3-2-0-0 at home this season and 4-5-0-0 on the season. The ‘Canes will continue the season long home-stand on Sunday when they welcome the Medicine Hat Tigers at the ENMAX Centre at 6:00pm.
