Hurricanes Blasted by Wheat Kings 8-4

Brandon, MB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes wrapped up a quick two game East Division road trip with an 8-4 loss in Brandon against the Wheat Kings.

Goaltender Akira Schmid made his Hurricanes debut in the game and he was peppered early. The Wheat Kings opened the scoring just 47 seconds into the game as Connor Gutenberg snapped one by Schmid on the glove side to make it 1-0. Just 3:58 later, the Wheat Kings struck again as Luka Burzan outwaited Schmid on a breakaway to make it 2-0 just 4:45 into the hockey game. Burzan potted his second of the period at the 10:34 mark to make it 3-0. Schmid was lifted from the game after giving up three goals on eight shots, but just 1:25 after Reece Klassen entered the game, Schmid was put back in and made three saves the rest of the first period as the ‘Canes were outshot 12-11 in the opening frame and trailed 3-0 after twenty minutes.

The Wheat Kings blew the doors open in the second period as they made it 4-0 when Cole Reinhardt buried his first of the season just 6:39 into the period. Burzan completed his hat-trick on a power play with a tap in on the back-door to make it 5-0. Just under two minutes later, Linden McCorrister potted a rebound to make it 6-0 before Burzan netted his fourth of the game to make it 7-0 Wheat Kings after two periods. Hurricanes outshot the Wheat Kings 18-13 in the second period.

In the third period, the Hurricanes would get on the board with a power play goal as Taylor Ross tipped home a Dylan Cozens shot to make it 7-1; Jackson Shepard earned an assist on the goal as well. Jake Elmer buried a slapshot on the power play to make it 7-2 at the 6:56 mark. Lethbridge continued to chip away as Cozens potted his fifth of the season at the 10:52 mark before Jordy Bellerive netted a power play goal to make it 7-4. ‘Canes pulled the goaltender with over three minutes left but Burzan would find the empty goal for his fifth goal of the game to seal an 8-4 win for Brandon.

2) ‘Canes – #24 Dylan Cozens (1 goal, 2 asssists)
3) Wheat Kings – #26 Linden McCorrister (1 goal)

The loss for the Hurricanes drops their record to 2-2-0-0 on the season as they earn a split on the two game road trip.
