Erica Perreaux

Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes began their final homestand of the regular season on Wednesday with a 4-1 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings at the ENMAX Centre.

It was a slow start to the game but both the Hurricanes and the Wheat Kings. The ‘Canes started to get some pressure as they had an early power play when Zack Stringer drew a tripping penalty. The Hurricanes peppered Brandon goaltender Jiri Patera on the man advantage but couldn’t open the scoring. The Wheat Kings had a power play in the back-half of the period but Carl Tetachuk stood tall as the game remained scoreless after twenty minutes. Lethbridge led the shots 10-8 in the opening frame.

In the second period the Hurricanes struck shorthanded as Jake Elmer scored his 37th goal of the season at the 5:36 mark from Dylan Cozens and Danila Palivko to make it 1-0; for Elmer, he extends his goal-scoring streak to 13-straight games. The ‘Canes added to their lead as Jake Leschyshyn tapped home his 36th of the year to make it 2-0 capping off a give-and-go with Nick Henry; Zack Stringer earned the second helper. Leschyshyn snapped home his second of the period on a power play with 16 seconds left in the frame to make it 3-0 Lethbridge after two periods.

The teams traded goals in the third period as Stringer banged home his first WHL goal at the 10:16 mark as he cashed on a Logan Barlage centering pass to make it 4-0; Elmer earned the second assist. Brandon broke the shutout bid for Tetachuk as Luka Burzan scored his 38th goal of the year to make it a 4-1 final.

Shots in the third period favoured the Hurricanes 10-8 and 38-28 in the hockey game. The ‘Canes went 1/4 on the power play and 5/5 on the penalty kill.

Three stars of the game were:
