Hurricanes Cruise by Rebels 7-3

Red Deer, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes kicked off a busy stretch on Wednesday as they traveled to Red Deer to face the Rebels and the ‘Canes continued their dominance against the Rebels earning a 7-3 victory.

The ‘Canes and Rebels traded first period goals in what was a slow-going start to the game yielded by a lot of whistles. The Rebels opened the scoring as Austin Pratt kicked home a puck on the doorstep at the 7:53 mark to make it 1-0. The ‘Canes tied the game as Zane Franklin banged home his fifth of the season and first in 17 games as he tied the game 1-1 – Brennan Menell and Brennan Riddle picked up the helpers on the goal. The ‘Canes outshot the Rebels 13-8 in the opening period.

The Hurricanes started the second period with a power play but were unable to capitalize with the extra man. They would however score early into the period as Zak Zborosky potted his 33rd of the season just 1:25 into the period as he was set up back door by Egor Babenko – Igor Merezhko picked up the second assist. The Rebels equalized the game at 2-2 as Austin Glover beat Stuart Skinner with a change-up that got through the five-hole to tie the game. The ‘Canes netted a pair of power play goals to put themselves ahead. First, Brennan Menell blasted home his 11th of the season and 50th point with a point shot that beat Lasse Petersen on the blocker side – Giorgio Estephan and Tyler Wong earned the helpers. Babenko added another goal on the man advantage at the 14:44 mark as he lifted on over the shoulder of the Rebel netminder – Jordy Bellerive and Matt Alfaro, who played in his 250th career WHL game, were handed the assists. Hurricanes outshot the Rebels 13-12 in the second period and held the edge 26-20 through two periods.

The Hurricanes struck on the power play again at the 7:18 mark of the third period as Tyler Wong scored his team-leading 39th goal of the season – Babenko and Estephan netted the helpers. Another power play goal at the 17:34 mark by Calen Addison who buried one by Riley Lamb who replaced Petersen to put the Hurricanes ahead 6-2. Red Deer make it 6-3 as Lane Zablocki beat Skinner at the 18:35 mark but the ‘Canes Jadon Joseph got it back scoring his third of the season with 29 seconds left in the game.

The ‘Canes outshot the Rebels 14-8 in the third period and 40-28 in the game. The ‘Canes went 4/8 on the power play and were 3/3 on the penalty kill.
