Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes welcome the league-leading Regina Pats on Wednesday night at the ENMAX Centre in hopes of having their streak continue and it took overtime but the Hurricanes earned a 5-4 victory over the Pats.

The Hurricanes started well outskating the Pats and got rewarded early. Tanner Nagel threw a puck to net and was able to beat Pats goalie Tyler Brown 4:10 into the game to make it 1-0 Hurricanes – Jadon Joseph and Zane Franklin picked up the assists on the goal. The Hurricanes made it 2-0 as they struck with a power play at the 13:23 mark as Ryan Bowen redirected a Jordy Bellerive point shot to the back of the net – Tyler Wong extended his point scoring streak to six games with the second assist. However, the two goal lead was short-lived as Sam Steel scored his 32 seconds later cutting the lead in half. Steel struck again before the period was out as he pick-pocketed Calen Addison and buried one over the blocker of Stuart Skinner with just 38 seconds left in the period as the first ended in a 2-2 tie. Hurricanes were outshot 15-7 in the first period.

The ‘Canes jumped on the Pats early in the second period as Wong potted his 20th goal of the season just 33 seconds on after Colton Kroeker made a beautiful cross-ice saucer pass to the Captain to put Lethbridge back in front 3-2. Later in the period, Jordy Bellerive beat Brown with a shot from a knee along the ice to give the ‘Canes their second two-goal lead of the night. Hurricanes outshot the Pats 14-7 in the middle frame and led the game 4-2 after forty minutes.

The Pats took over in the third period as they outshot the Hurricanes 22-10 in the final twenty minutes. Regina scored to cut the lead in half as Adam Brooks scored his 14th goal of the season five minutes into the third period to make it a 4-3 game. Just 6:07 later, the Pats would tie the game as Jake Leschyshyn scored his 12th of the year to make it a 4-4 tie. Hurricanes continued to bend in the late stages of the third period but were able to hold to force overtime in a large part due to strong goaltending by Skinner to keep it tied.

In the overtime period, each team was credited with two shots on goal but the most important one was that of Brennan Menell who jammed home a puck on a goal mouth scramble 3:12 into the extra frame to give the Hurricanes a 5-4 overtime win over the Pats.

The final shots in the game favoured the Pats 46-33. ‘Canes went 1/6 on the power play and 2/2 on the penalty kill – ‘Canes have now killed off 15 straight penalties while not allowing a power play goal against in their last five games.
