Hurricanes Defeat Rebels 2-1 in OT

Red Deer, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes earned a 2-1 overtime victory on Sunday in Red Deer against the Rebels at the ENMAX Centrium.

The ‘Canes came out firing in the first period as they generated some early scoring chances but were unable to capitalize on Rebels netminder Ethan Anders. The ‘Canes had a power play but and despite having a few shots on the man advantage, the game remained scoreless. The Rebels had a pair of power play chances but were also held scoreless as the first period ended 0-0. The Hurricanes outshot the Rebels 18-7 in the opening frame.

The Hurricanes continued to press the Rebels in the second period were still unable to solve Anders. The ‘Canes killed an early power play for the Rebels to keep the game scoreless. Red Deer broke the scoreless tie with a shorthanded goal at the 10:16 mark as Reese Johnson snapped one by the blocker of Logan Flodell to make it 1-0; Josh Tarzwell earned the lone assist on the Rebel goal. The ‘Canes had a great chance to equalize when Jordy Bellerive snapped on goal and Anders was able to get enough of it to slow the puck which then sat on the goal line before it was swept off the goal line as the Rebels lead 1-0 after forty minutes of play. Hurricanes outshot the Rebels 12-7 in the second period and held the edge 30-14 in the first two periods.

In the third period, the ‘Canes would continue to put shots on goal in hopes of tying the game and at the 9:42 mark they were able to do that as Bellerive had on pinball off his shin-pad and into the net for his 32nd of the season to make it a 1-1 tie. The Rebels had a late power play in the game but the ‘Canes came up with a strong kill to force overtime.

The ‘Canes, for the third straight game would to go extra time, but unlike the previous two the Hurricanes came out victorious. Bellerive would bang home his own rebound at the 2:57 mark of the overtime period to lift he ‘Canes to their first overtime win of the year as they take it 2-1 over the Rebels.

Shots in the overtime period favoured the ‘Canes 4-1 as they outshot Red Deer 44-23 in the game. Both teams went 0/5 on the power play.

The Hurricanes improve to 23-21-6-0 on the season with the victory. It was just their first overtime victory of the season as it snaps a four game losing streak. The win also improves their record to 4-0-0-0 against Red Deer this season and 16-1-1-0 in their last 18 regular season meetings.

The Hurricanes will return to action on Friday when they welcome Tanner Nagel, Giorgio Estephan, Stuart Skinner and the Swift Current Broncos in the first of a pair of weekend games at the ENMAX Centre.
