Hurricanes Drop 5-4 Decision to Broncos

Swift Current, SK – The Lethbridge Hurricanes had their two game winning streak snapped on Tuesday night by dropping a 5-4 decision to the Broncos in Swift Current.

It was a fast pace to the first period as the Broncos capitalized early on a power play as Calvin Spencer tipped home his first of two goals on the night just three minutes into the game to give Swift Current a 1-0 lead. It took just 1:39 for the ‘Canes to respond however as Giorgio Estephan sniped home his 20th of the season at the 4:39 mark – Colton Kroeker and Brennan Menell picked up the assists. Estephan potted another on a power play at the 15:27 mark after a Kroeker rebound to put the ‘Canes in front 2-1 – Tyler Wong picked up the second assist on the goal. The ‘Canes led 2-1 after twenty minutes and outshot the Broncos 13-12 in the first period.

The ‘Canes continued to roll early in the second period adding to their lead. With a power play, Igor Merezhko wristed home his first WHL goal in his 95th career game to give the Hurricanes a 3-1 lead – Ryan Bowen and Egor Babenko picked up the helpers on the goal. Under two minutes later, the ‘Canes struck again as Kroeker guided a loose puck home past Travis Child to make it 4-1 Lethbridge – Wong and Estephan earned the helpers on that goal. However, the Broncos took over from there as they stormed back to tie the game before the period was out. Tyler Steenbergen tipped home his team-leading 27th goal of the season to make it 4-2 before Max Lajoie netted his seventh to pull the Broncos within one. Just 32 seconds after Lajoie’s goal, Colby Sissons stepped in and beat Stuart Skinner high glove at the 14:14 mark to tie the game 4-4. Broncos held the edge in shots 16-12 in the second period.

In the third, the Broncos had a lengthy five-on-three power play to start the period as the ‘Canes ran into some penalty troubles. The ‘Canes killed off over two minutes’ worth of five-on-three time but struck with just two seconds left on the power play as Spencer scored his second of the night. The Hurricanes efforted a come-back but failed to tie the game as Swift Current went on to the 5-4 win.

The Broncos outshot the Hurricanes 15-8 in the third period and 43-33 overall in the hockey game. The ‘Canes went 2/3 on the power play while the Broncos went 2/6 with the extra man.

Three stars of the game were:
1) Broncos – #21 Calvin Spencer – 2 goals
2) ‘Canes – #9 Giorgio Estephan – 2 goals, 1 assist
