Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes returned home to begin a brief two game home stand on Sunday as they dropped their third straight game falling 5-3 to the Saskatoon Blades.
Tyler Wong scored twice including his 100th career goal in the losing cause while Dylan Cozens netted his first WHL goal in his WHL debut. Kolten Olynek, Mason McCarty and Nolan Reid all had multi-point games in the game for the Blades.
It was a penalty-filled first period for both sides as the ‘Canes had four opportunities with the extra man while the Blades had two. Both teams had extended five-on-three power plays that they failed to score on. The Hurricanes opened the scoring however with a power play goal at the 8:52 mark as Tyler Wong scored his 100th career goal and eighth of the season to put the ‘Canes up 1-0 – assists went to Brennan Menell and Ryley Lindgren. The Blades responded as Mason McCarty scored his 14th goal of the season on a partial breakaway as he tracked down a loose puck after exiting the penalty box to tie it at 1-1 after twenty minutes of play. Shots in the first period favoured the Blades 11-5.
It was a slow start to the second period as not much happened in the first ten minutes with each team just directing three shots on goal in the first half of the period. The Hurricanes started to throw more pucks on goal in the second half of the period but failed to beat Logan Flodell. The Blades took their first lead of the night at the 14:15 mark as Ryan Graham redirected a Nolan Reid point shot by Stuart Skinner for a power play goal putting the Blades up 2-1 after forty minutes of play. Hurricanes outshot the Blades 11-9 in the second period.
On an early power play in the third period Wong scored his second of the night beating Flodell low on the glove side just 1:41 into the game to tie it at 2-2 – Menell and Skinner earned the assists on Wong’s second. The wheels fell off for the Hurricanes as the Blades scored three unanswered goals en route to the victory. Kolten Olynek scored his first of two goals in the game at the 11:53 mark to put the Blades up 3-2. Wyatt Sloboshan added a power play goal just 2:40 later before Olynek netted an empty net goal with 2:30 left in the game. Cozens scored his first WHL goal with 4.7 seconds left in the game to round out the scoring seeing the Blades go on to the 5-3 victory.
The Hurricanes outshot the Blades 14-13 in the third period but were outshot 33-30 on the night. The ‘Canes went 3/8 on the power play while the Blades were 1/4 with the extra man.
Three stars of the game were:
