Hurricanes Dropped in Overtime by Hitmen

Calgary, AB – The Lethbrdige Hurricanes played their final game of 2017 on Saturday in Calgary and were handed a 3-2 overtime loss by the Hitmen at Scotiabank Saddledome.

The Hurricanes played a very strong first period on the road against the Hitmen generating a ton of early scoring chances but couldn’t capitalize. The ‘Canes continued to pepper Nick Schneider in the Calgary goal and would eventually open the scoring on a power play goal by Jordy Bellerive who potted his 20th goal of the season to make it 1-0; Giorgio Estephan and Tate Olson picked up the helpers. The ‘Canes added another with 1:08 left in the first period as Egor Zudilov threw one on goal and it deflected off a Calgary defenseman and passed Schneider to make it 2-0 after twenty minutes of play.

Calgary stormed out in the second period as they tied the game just 3:15 into the middle frame on a goal by Andrei Grishakov tapped home a centering pass from Jakob Stukel to make it a 2-1 Lethbridge lead. Grishakov scored his second of the period just 4:28 later as he cut off the left boards and snapped it over the glove of Klassen to tie the game 2-2. ‘Canes outshot the Hitmen 16-14 in the second period.

In the third period, the ‘Canes began to take the game back over. The ‘Canes outshot the Hitmen 8-3 in the first ten minutes as they generated some good looks to take the lead back but Schneider stood tall in the Calgary crease. The Hurricanes outshot the Hitmen 14-10 in the third period.

The game went to overtime and it took all of 56 seconds for the Hitmen to end the game when Mark Kastelic one-timed home the winner on a pass from Jackson van de Leest to give Calgary a 3-2 decision.

The Hurricanes outshot the Hitmen 42-30 in the game. Lethbridge was 1/3 on the power play while Calgary was 1/1 with the extra man.

1) Hitmen – #19 Andrei Grishakov (2 goals)
2) Hitmen – #31 Nick Schneider (40 saves)
3) ‘Canes – #15 Jordy Bellerive (1 goal, 9 shots on goal)

The Hurricanes fall to 16-17-3-0 on the season and complete the 2017 portion of their schedule.
