Hurricanes Duplicate 7-4 Win from Friday

Edmonton, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes made their final of three trips to the Alberta Capital to face the Edmonton Oil Kings on Wednesday night and the ‘Canes earned another 7-4 win over the OK’s.

Newcomers Zak Zborosky and Alec Baer both made their Hurricanes debut after being acquired in separate trades on Monday while Kyle Yewchuk, who was acquired on Friday from the Oil Kings, made his return to Edmonton to face his former club.

It didn’t take long for Zborosky to make his presence felt as the overage forward was sprung free on a breakaway and on his first shift and first shot as a ‘Cane he roofed it by Patrick Dea to make it 1-0 Lethbridge just 1:06 into the hockey game. Jordy Bellerive picked up his 18th goal of the season just 1:23 later on a rebound to make it 2-0 ending the night of Dea who allowed two goals on five shots. Josh Dechaine, who entered the game for the Oil Kings, didn’t fare any better as Egor Babenko snuck one through the legs of the netminder to make it 3-0. Tyler Wong scored his 29th of the season at the 13:41 mark to make it 4-0 as he buried a two-on-one pass from Babenko as the ‘Canes controlled 4-0 after twenty minutes of play. The ‘Canes outshot the Oil Kings 15-14 in the opening period.

The craziness continued in the second period as Edmonton came out flying early in the period. Ty Gerla scored on a two-on-one to get the Oil Kings on the board at the 2:58 mark to make it 4-1. Just eight seconds later, another two-on-one and Gerla struck again to cut the lead to two. It only took 27 seconds and Edmonton scored again as Will Warm stepped up on another odd-man rush to make it 4-3. Hurricanes head coach Brent Kisio took a time out and it seemed to settle the ‘Canes. With a power play, Baer would end the run by the OK’s as he tapped home a rebound for his first in a Hurricanes uniform at the 5:40 mark. Baer struck again at the 12:14 mark to give the ‘Canes a 6-3 lead after two periods. Edmonton outshot Lethbridge 16-12 in the second period.

The teams traded a pair of goals in the third period. Bellerive netted his second of the game and 19th of the season just 36 seconds into the period as he was sprung on the left wing and snapped one over Dechaine to make it 7-4 – Zborosky and Ryan Bowen picked up the assists on the goal. Edmonton rounded out the scoring as Conner McDonald handcuffed Stuart Skinner to make it a 7-4 final.

The Hurricanes were outshot 13-9 in the third period and 43-36 in the game. The ‘Canes went 1/4 on the power play while the Oil Kings finished 0/2.

Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #15 Jordy Bellerive – 2 goals
2) ‘Canes – #8 Alec Baer – 2 goals
3) Oil Kings – #24 Brett Kemp – 3 assists

The Hurricanes have now won three straight games, two of them against Edmonton by 7-4 scores. The ‘Canes improved to 23-15-3-2 on the season.

The Hurricanes return home Friday as they welcome the Prince George Cougars on ‘Cougar Night’ at the ENMAX Centre. Tickets are available online, by calling 403-329-SEA (7328) or by visiting the ENMAX Centre or Yates Ticket Centre’s.
