Hurricanes Earn 3-2 OT Win Over Wheat Kings

Brandon, MB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes continued their East Division road trip on Wednesday night in Brandon against the Wheat Kings and the ‘Canes picked up 3-2 overtime win for their 40th victory of the season.

The ‘Canes had a great first period on the road despite the score being tied after twenty minutes of play. The two teams went back and forth early with the best chance coming for Brandon’s Linden McCorrister but Stuart Skinner made a brilliant save. The Hurricanes struck first for the 41st time this season as Ryan Vandervlis netted his sixth goal of the season at the 13:34 mark on the power play to make it 1-0 Lethbridge – Alec Baer and Calen Addison picked up the assists. The ‘Canes had a second opportunity on the power play but they were unable to score and quickly thereafter Brandon tied the game as Tyler Coulter snapped one by Skinner to make it a 1-1 tie after twenty minutes of play. The ‘Canes outshot the Wheat Kings 13-6 in the first period.

It was an even second period as each team mustered 11 shots on goal in the middle frame. There was off-setting penalties mid-way through the second period. During the four-on-four play, Nolan Patrick ripped home his 17th of the season to give Brandon a 2-1 lead at the 9:17 mark. The Hurricanes answered back 5:20 later as Baer banged home his 13th of the season at the 14:37 mark – Brennan Menell and Addison picked up the assists on the goal to tie the game 2-2.

It was a great third period that saw countless opportunities for both sides. Menell had a great chance down the slot but rang it off the goal post. The Wheat Kings had a great chance on a two-on-one with Coulter and Mattheos but Skinner came across and robbed the Wheaties sophomore. Shots in the third period favoured Brandon 17-14.

The Hurricanes and Wheat Kings went to overtime as neither team scored in the third period and in the extra session, Giorgio Estephan played hero scoring his 28th of the season just 46 seconds into the overtime period – Menell and Tyler Wong picked up the assists on the game winning goal.

The Hurricanes outshot the Wheat Kings 39-34 on the night. ‘Canes went 1/6 on the power play and 2/2 on the penalty kill.

1) Wheat Kings – #21 Tyler Coulter – 1 goal, 1 assist
2) ‘Canes – #8 Alec Baer – 1 goal, 1 assist
3) ‘Canes – #74 Stuart Skinner – 32 saves

The win for the Hurricanes improved their record to 9-1-1-0 in their last 11 road games and 20-2-1-1 in their last 24 outings. The win was the ‘Canes 40th of the season improving 40-17-4-3 on the season. The ‘Canes have now won four straight games on the road and four straight overall.
