Hurricanes Earn 30th Victory; Edge Rebels 3-2 in OT
Red Deer, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes completed their mid-week back-to-back as they traveled to Red Deer to face the Rebels and the Hurricanes picked up a 3-2 overtime victory extending their point streak to 12 games.
It was a fast-paced first period that saw the Rebels outshoot the Hurricanes 15-9 in the opening period. The Hurricanes scored the only goal in the first period though as Giorgio Estephan sniped his 25th of the season by Rebels’ goalie Lasse Petersen at the 8:18 mark to make it 1-0 – Egor Babenko and Igor Merezhko picked up the assists on the goal. Later in the period, Estephan got in his first fight since February 13th, 2015 as he dropped the mitts with Brandon Schuldhaus after Schuldhaus laid an open ice hit on Tyler Wong. Estephan earned an extra penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The power play carried over to the second period for the Rebels but failed to score with the extra man. The Rebels would however score on their second power play of the game as Jared Freadrich tied the game at the 7:52 mark on a one-timer passed Stuart Skinner making it 1-1 – Michael Spacek and Austin Pratt picked up the helpers on the goal. The ‘Canes had a few good looks in the period, including a Calen Addison, but were unable to solve Petersen as the game was tied after forty minutes of play. Rebels outshot the ‘Canes 13-12 in the second period.
In the third period, the teams traded goals as Red Deer jumped out to their first lead of the game when Brandon Hagel finished off a two-on-one beating Skinner on the blocker side at the 11:47 mark to put the Rebels up 2-1. However, the ‘Canes pushed and produced a game-tying goal as Tyler Wong netted his team-leading 37th goal of the season with 2:26 left in regulation – Brennan Menell and Estephan picked up the helpers. The ‘Canes outshot the Rebels 11-6 in the third period.
The Rebels had the first two great chances to end the game in overtime but Skinner came up with two big saves. On the Hurricanes first opportunity, Estephan ended the game with his second of the night and 26th of the season just 46 seconds into the extra session – Menell earned the lone assist on the game-winning goal.
The Hurricanes were outshot 2-1 in overtime and 36-33 in the hockey game. The Rebels went 1/3 on the power play while the Hurricanes did not receive a power play opportunity in the game.
Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #9 Giorgio Estephan – 2 goals, 1 assist
2) ‘Canes – #74 Stuart Skinner – 34 saves
3) Rebels – #23 Michael Spacek – 2 assists
The Hurricanes have now won six straight games and have collected at least a single point in 12 straight outings posting a 10-0-1-1 record in that span. The Hurricanes improve to 30-15-4-3 on the season with the win.
