Prince Albert, SK – The Lethbridge Hurricanes made their final trip to Prince Albert as they continued their East Division road trip against the Raiders Friday night as the ‘Canes earned a 5-2 victory.
It was a good first period for the Hurricanes who were able to take advantage on the power play. The ‘Canes struck first in the game at the 8:44 into the game as Matt Alfaro tapped home his 24th of the season just 12 seconds into a man advantage – Giorgio Estephan and Tyler Wong picked up the assists as they continued their point scoring streaks (Estephan a five game streak, Wong a nine game streak). The ‘Canes capitalized again on the man advantage as this time Zak Zborosky scored his 40th goal of the season to give Lethbridge a 2-0 lead – Wong and Brennan Menell earned the assists. Zborosky becomes the second player on the Hurricanes to reach the 40-goal plateau joining Wong as the other; it’s the first time since 1999-2000 season that the ‘Canes have had two 40-goal scorers.
Raiders came out flying early in the second period and cut the lead in half as Parker Kelly stole a puck behind the Hurricanes net centered to Simon Stransky who beat Ryan Gilchrist for his 18th of the season to cut the lead to 2-1. Later in the period, Kelly and Igor Merezhko were handed off-setting penalties and on the four-on-four play both teams were able to strike. First, the ‘Canes Egor Babenko netted his 21st of the season at the 16:14 mark as he finished a one-timer on a two-on-one from Alfaro. Shortly thereafter though, the Raiders were able to pull back within one as Max Martin potted his seventh of the campaign to make it 3-2 Hurricanes after two periods. The ‘Canes outshot the Raiders 17-13 in the second period and held the edge 29-25 after forty minutes of play.
The Hurricanes added a pair in the third period. Tyler Wong finished off a two-on-one for his third point of the night and 48th goal of the season at the 7:30 mark – Jordy Bellerive picked up the lone assist on the goal. The ‘Canes added another as Alfaro scored his second of the game and 25th of the season at the 13:47 mark on another power play – Estephan and Menell drew the helpers as the Hurricanes went on to a 5-2 win.
The ‘Canes were outshot 15-12 in the third period but held the edge over the Raiders 41-40 in the hockey game. Lethbridge was 3/6 on the power play and 6/6 on the penalty kill.
Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #16 Matt Alfaro – 2 goals, 1 assist
2) Raiders – #23 Simon Stransky – 1 goal
3) ‘Canes – #5 Tyler Wong – 1 goal, 2 assists
Ryan Gilchrist made 38 saves for the victory, his sixth straight win. The victory for the Hurricanes was their fifth straight overall and their fifth straight on the road. The ‘Canes are now 10-1-1-0 in their last 12 away from home and 41-17-4-3 on the season.
