Hurricanes Edged 4-3 by Silvertips

Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes welcome the Everett Silvertips on Friday night in hopes of remaining perfect on home ice but the ‘Tips picked up a 4-3 victory at the ENMAX Centre.

The Hurricanes once again received a healthy body back in the line-up as Ryan Vandervlis made his return after missing the last five games with an upper body injury.

It was a sluggish start to the game for the Hurricanes who found themselves down 1-0 just 59 seconds into the contest as the Silvertips struck early when Bryce Kindopp netted his first of the season. The ‘Canes were held shot-less in the first six minutes of the period before they found their stride. Despite a more even second half of the period, Everett was able to build on their lead as Riley Sutter redirected a point shot past Stuart Skinner to make it 2-0 Silvertips after twenty minutes of play. Shots were tied 12-12 in the opening frame.

The ‘Canes struck for three power play goals in the second period. Jordy Bellerive got the ‘Canes on the board with his second goal of the season at the 3:58 mark – Vandervlis and Giorgio Estephan earned the helpers. For Estephan, it was his 250th career point as he becomes the 15th player in franchise history to reach the milestone. The ‘Canes tied the game as Dylan Cozens scored his team-leading fourth of the year on a breakaway making it 2-2. Lethbridge took their first lead as Bellerive netted his second of the period and 100th career point to put the ‘Canes ahead 3-2 – Estephan and Zane Franklin picked up the assists on the play. Shots were tied 11-11 in the second period.

In the third period, the Silvertips carried the play outshooting the ‘Canes 13-9 in the period. Everett tied the game at the 5:59 mark as Kindopp scored his second of the game to tie the game at 3-3. The Silvertips took the lead as Sutter scored his second of the game on a wraparound with 3:42 remaining in the game to put the ‘Tips ahead 4-3. The ‘Canes pulled the netminder but failed to tie the game as Everett hung on for the victory.

The Hurricanes were outshot 36-32 on the night. The ‘Canes went 3/5 on the power play and 5/5 on the penalty kill in the loss.

Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Tips – #14 Riley Sutter (2 goals, 1 assist)
2) ‘Canes – #15 Jordy Bellerive (2 goals)
3) ‘Tips – #19 Bryce Kindopp (2 goals)

The Hurricanes fall to 3-4-0-0 on the season with the loss as they suffer their first home defeat of the season. The ‘Canes are now 3-1-0-0 at the ENMAX Centre this season.

The ‘Canes are back in action on Sunday when they travel to face the Calgary Hitmen at Scotiabank Saddledome before they begin a season-long seven game home-stand next Friday against the Swift Current Broncos.
