Hurricanes Handed 5-2 Loss by Giants

Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes continued their four game homestand on Friday as they dropped a 5-2 decision to the Vancouver Giants at the ENMAX Centre.

The ‘Canes came out gangbusters in the first period outshooting and out-chancing the Giants early in the hockey game. The ‘Canes struck first to open the scoring as Jordy Bellerive redirected a Calen Addison point shot to make it 1-0; Giorgio Estephan earned the second assist. Before the period was out, the Giants were able to equalize as Alex Kannok-Leipert had his point shot pinball by Stuart Skinner to make it 1-1 after twenty minutes of play. The ‘Canes outshot the Giants 12-10 in the opening frame.

Early in the second period the Giants were able to capitalize on a Hurricanes turnover as Tyler Benson finished off a passing play from Ty Ronning just 4:30 into the middle frame to put the Giants up 2-1. The ‘Canes answered back as Estephan went coast-to-coast and snapped one over the glove of Vancouver’s David Tendeck to make it a 2-2 game. However, that lasted all of 39 seconds before Benson potted his second of the period to restore the Giants one goal lead as Vancouver lead 3-2 after two periods. The ‘Canes outshot the Giants 10-6 in the second period.

In the third, the Giants added two more. Ronning scored his 35th goal of the season with a power play strike just five seconds into a Brennan Riddle penalty to make it 4-2 Vancouver 3:39 into the period. The ‘Canes pushed to try and mount a come-back, including pulling the goaltender late in the game. Jared Dmytriw sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 2:29 left in the game to make it a 5-2 Vancouver lead.

The ‘Canes outshot the Giants 13-10 in the third period and 35-26 in the game. The ‘Canes were 0/4 on the power play while the Giants were 1/5 with the extra man.

Three stars of the game were:
1) Giants – #17 Tyler Benson (2 goals)
2) Giants – #14 James Malm (2 assists)
3) ‘Canes – #15 Jordy Bellerive (1 goal, 1 assist)

The Hurricanes fall back to below five-hundred on the season as they drop to 17-18-3-0 on the season and 11-7-2-0 on home ice.
