Hurricanes Handed Second Straight Loss; Fall in Brandon

Brandon, MB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes continued their four game East Division road trip on Tuesday with a 6-0 loss in Brandon against the Wheat Kings.

The Hurricanes started strong with a few good chances on Wheat Kings netminder Logan Thompson but the game stayed scoreless. Stelio Mattheos opened the scoring with his 39th goal of the season to make it 1-0 just 6:45 into the game as he buried on a power play. Wheat Kings struck again as Luka Burzan banged home a rebound for his 12th of the year to make it 2-0. With under a minute left in the opening frame, Ty Lewis potted a rebound for his 40th of the season to make it 3-0 Brandon after one period of play. The ‘Canes outshot the Wheat Kings 14-9 in the first period.

Reece Klassen replaced Flodell for the start of the second period after he allowed three goals on nine shots in the first period. The Wheat Kings added to their lead early in the middle frame as Mattheos scored his second of the night and 40th of the season just 3:35 in on a power play to make it a 4-0 Brandon lead. The ‘Canes appeared to score as Jake Elmer whacked a puck that was laying on the back of the Wheat Kings net over top of the cross-bar; the puck hit the back of Thompson and was signalled a goal but would be overturned. On the same play, Matthew Stanley fought Caden Dailey and was assessed an instigating penalty as well. The Wheat Kings once again struck on the power play as Lewis buried his second of the night to make it 5-0.

The Hurricanes started the third period on a power play but could not beat Thompson. The ‘Canes had a total of eight power plays in the game as they went scoreless. The Wheat Kings added another goal in the third period as Chase Hartje stepped up and snapped one by Klassen with just 3:18 left in the game to make it a 6-0 final.
