Hurricanes Kick Trip Off With Win in Saskatoon
Saskatoon, SK – The Lethbridge Hurricanes began a four game East Division road trip on Friday night with a 5-3 victory over the Saskatoon Blades at SaskTel Centre.
The Hurricanes had a great start to the game as they hemmed the Blades in the own zone for the first two minutes of the game but were unable to solve Nolan Maier early in the game. The ‘Canes had an early power play opportunity as well but couldn’t break the scoreless tie. Blades opened the scoring at the 9:58 mark as Braylon Shmyr cut in and roofed the puck by Logan Flodell to make it 1-0 Saskatoon. Hurricanes were outshot 12-9 in the opening period as they trailed by a single goal.
At the end of the first period, Blades captain Evan Fiala was assessed a double-minor for rough. The ‘Canes struck on the early power play opportunity as Taylor Ross banged home his 19th goal of the season to make it a 1-1 tie; Jordy Bellerive and Calen Addison earned the helpers on the goal. Just 1:22 later, Ross scored again as he worked in on the left-wing and snapped one by Maier to five the ‘Canes their first lead; Addison and Ty Prefontaine earned the assists. For Prefontaine, the assist extends his point scoring streak to six straight games while the tally for Ross makes him the fourth Hurricanes player to reach the 20-goal plateau this season. The lead lasted just over seven minutes however, as Bradly Goethals equalized the game at 2-2 as he banged home a rebound by Flodell to make it 2-2 after forty minutes of play. The ‘Canes outshot the Blades 15-14 in the second period.
The Hurricanes pulled back ahead in the third period as Bellerive snapped home his team-leading 44th goal of the season at the 7:32 mark while shorthanded; Jake Elmer drew the lone assist on only the third shorthanded goal of the season to make it 3-2 Lethbridge. Saskatoon clawed back to tie the game when Eric Florchuk buried his 14th passed a sprawled Flodell to make it 3-3. The ‘Canes once again pulled ahead as Elmer rifled home his 16th of the season with 5:49 left in the game to make it 4-3; Jadon Joseph and Tate Olson earned the helpers. Elmer sealed the victory scoring his second of the night and 17th of the season with 1:09 left to make it a 5-3 final.
Hurricanes were outshot 20-9 in the third period and 46-32 in the hockey game. The ‘Canes went 1/3 on the power play and 6/6 on the penalty kill.

The win for the Hurricanes was their third straight victory and was their sixth win in their last seven outings. The ‘Canes now sit with a 32-25-6-0 record on the season; Lethbridge has now won three straight road games and are 6-4-1-0 in their last 11 road games.
The Hurricanes continue their four game road trip on Saturday as they travel to Prince Albert to face the Raiders at the Art Hauser Centre at 6:00pm MT. The ‘Canes will then travel to Brandon on Tuesday and Moose Jaw on Wednesday. All three games can be heard on 106.7 ROCK or seen at Browns Socialhouse.
