Lethbridge, AB – The Hurricanes and Broncos faced off for the second time this week with two big points up for grabs as only four points separated them in the standings. The Canes comeback from New Year’s Day was well documented after rallying from a 4-1 deficit in the third period, but Lethbridge knew they’d be facing a hungry and angry Broncos team after they let that lead slip away.
The Hurricanes got off to a fast start as they would go on their first powerplay less than 5 minutes into the game and Dan Johnston’s point shot would find the back of the net as it went off Dalton Reum’s stick and past Landon Bow. Joel Topping and Brady Ramsay added the assists on Johnston’s 8th goal of the season. Lethbridge would continue to get some quality scoring chances, but that would be the lone goal of the period as the Hurricanes outshot the Broncos 12-9.
The Hurricanes came out with all sorts of jump in the second and had plenty of sustained pressure in the Broncos zone in the opening five minutes, but no goals to speak of. Landon Bow stopped all 15 shots the Hurricanes threw his way, while at the other end Ty Rimmer stopped the 12 shots he faced in the period. The Hurricanes continued to hold on to their one-goal edge and continued to outshoot the Broncos 27-21.
Swift Current would pull the trigger on the equalizer at the four minute mark of the third on their fourth powerplay of the game. Adam Lowry picked the top corner gloveside on Rimmer that made it a 1-1 game. The Broncos Captain wasn’t done there as Lowry gave his team the lead with just over 2 minutes to play. The Canes would rally and pull even 24 seconds later when Sam McKechnie (Adam Henry, Remi Laurencelle) put the puck over Bow, his 19th of the year made it 2-2. For the first time in their season series, the Broncos and Hurricanes would go to OT which would solve nothing, despite Swift Current outshooting Lethbridge 5-1 in the extra frame. In the shootout, both McKechnie and Russ Maxwell would be stopped while Lowry and Graham Black scored to earn the two points and hand Lethbridge their 5th shootout loss of the season. Final shots were 42-36 for the Broncos while the Canes were 1/5 on the PP, Swift Current was 1/4.
