PLAYOFF GAME DAY: Hurricanes Open Second Round Tonight Against Brandon

Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes begin their second round series with the Brandon Wheat Kings tonight at 7:00pm at the ENMAX Centre.

The Hurricanes eliminated the Red Deer Rebels in the first round in a five game series. Brad Morrison led all ‘Canes and skaters in the WHL Playoffs with 16 points (6g-10a) in the series against Red Deer while Jordy Bellerive had 10 points (4g-6a) in the series. It is the second straight season the Hurricanes have gone to at least the second round of the post-season.

The Wheat Kings are coming off a six-game series win over the Central Division Champion Medicine Hat Tigers in the opening round. After dropping the first two games of the series by a combined 14-5, the Wheat Kings rattled off four straight victories to advance to the second round for the first time since their WHL Championship in 2016.

This will be the fourth time in history that the Hurricanes will face the Wheat Kings in the WHL Playoffs. The ‘Canes have posted a 1-2 series record with the latest meeting being a six-game Lethbridge win in the first round back in 2008. The team who has held home-ice advantage in the three prior series has been victorious.

PLAYOFF SERIES: Tonight will be Game 1 of the best-of-seven second round series between the Hurricanes and the Wheat Kings. It will be the first time the two have faced off in the post-season since 2008 when the ‘Canes eliminated the Wheaties in six games.

Lethbridge posted a 1-3-0-0 record against Brandon, with their lone victory coming at the ENMAX Centre. The ‘Canes have posted a 6-6-0-0 record against the Wheaties over the last three seasons.

NEWS & NOTES:
Three Before: The Hurricanes and Wheat Kings have met in the post-season on three prior occasions with the most recent being in 2008. The ‘Canes have posted a 1-2 series record against the Wheat Kings in their three prior meetings. Lethbridge won in six games in 2008 while Brandon won in four games in 1998 and five games in 1994. The team with home-ice advantage as won all three prior series.

Experience: The Hurricanes have 286 man-games worth of playoff experience. Of all the ‘Canes, the most experienced is Igor Merezhko who has skated in 30 post-season games. The ‘Canes entered the 2018 playoffs with 190 games worth of playoff experience compared to 95 when they started the 2017 playoffs.

Game 1’s: The Hurricanes enter tonight having posted an all-time record of 18-16 in Game 1’s in their post-season history. The ‘Canes earned a 6-0 win in the first game against the Red Deer Rebels in the first round of the WHL Playoffs. The Hurricanes have won two straight Game 1’s dating back to last year’s playoffs.

Go Mo Go: Hurricanes overage forward Brad Morrison has been on a tear in the WHL Playoffs so far as he has racked up 16 points (6g-10a) in five games in the opening round against the Red Deer Rebels; an average of 3.20 points per game. Morrison currently leads the entire WHL in playoff scoring.

Special Teams: The Hurricanes special teams have been terrific in the playoffs. The ‘Canes power play has converted at a 47.6% clip going 10/21 on the man advantage while the penalty kill has killed at 80% (24/30). The ‘Canes PP was just 2/36 (5.6%) and PK was 62.2% (23/37) in their final nine regular season games.
