Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes kicked off a light week of games with a mid-week clash against the Swift Current Broncos at the ENMAX Centre on Wednesday and earned a 5-1 victory.
It was the return of Ryley Lindgren to Lethbridge after a trade sent him from the Hurricanes to the Broncos last week. Lindgren was held off the scoresheet in his return to the ENMAX Centre.
It was a fast paced first period that had some animosity and intensity. Both teams were flying and had some great chances early on in the game. The ‘Canes broke through at the 14:28 mark as Giorgio Estephan beat Broncos goalie Jordan Papirny to make it 1-0 Lethbridge – Alec Baer and Brennan Menell earned the assists on the goal. Hurricanes outshot the Broncos 15-10 in the first period and held the 1-0 lead.
The Broncos carried the play in the second period but Stuart Skinner stood on his head. Swift Current tied the game on a power play as Conner Chaulk banged home a rebound passed Skinner to make it 1-1 – Aleksi Heponiemi and Max Lajoie picked up the assists on the game-tying goal. The Broncos continued to press for a go ahead goal but Skinner made countless big saves. Late in the period, the ‘Canes forged ahead as Ryan Vandervlis placed on through the legs of Papirny with under three minutes left for his third of the season to put Lethbridge up 2-1 – Tanner Nagel and Zane Franklin earned the assists on the goal. Swift Current held the edge in shots 19-10 in the middle frame and 29-25 overall in the game.
The Hurricanes started the third period with a power play for 1:37 but the ‘Canes failed to score to extend their lead. They would however make it a 3-1 hockey game as Vandervlis tapped home his second of the night and fourth of the season – Franklin and Brennan Riddle picked up the helpers. The ‘Canes made it 4-1 with a goal off the rush as Jordy Bellerive snuck one by Papirny at the 11:01 mark for his 21st of the season – Zak Zborosky and Kyle Yewchuk earned the helpers. The ‘Canes rounded out the scoring with their fifth of the night courtesy of Zborosky on an absolutely bullet top shelf on a partial break as he ripped home his 30th of the season with just 4:03 left in the hockey game helping the ‘Canes to a 5-1 victory.
The Hurricanes and Broncos each fired 13 shots on goal in the third period; Swift Current held the edge 42-38 on the night. Lethbridge went 0/2 on the power play while the Swift was 1/3 with the extra man.
Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #74 Stuart Skinner – 41 saves
2) ‘Canes – #21 Ryan Vandervlis – 2 goals
3) ‘Canes – #25 Zane Franklin – 2 assists
The win for the Hurricanes improves their record to 18-4-3-1 in their last 26 games and 25-15-4-3 overall on the season. The victory pulled the ‘Canes within four points of the Central Division leading Medicine Hat Tigers.
