Tough Second Sinks Hurricanes

Edmonton, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes began the final week of the regular season on Tuesday with a 5-1 loss in Edmonton against the Oil Kings at Rogers Place.

The Hurricanes started strong in the game as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 5:48 into the game when Jadon Joseph banged home his ninth goal of the season right as a power play expired; Jake Elmer and Brad Morrison picked up the assists – for Morrison, it was his 150th WHL assist. At the midway point of the first period, the ‘Canes were outshooting the Oil Kings 10-1. Edmonton came on in the second half of the period as the shots favoured the Hurricanes 12-9 after one period.

The Oil Kings dominated the second period as they outshot the Hurricanes 16-5 in the second period and scored five times. Just 2:09 into the period, Colton Kehler snapped home his 31st goal of the season on a power play to tie the game 1-1. Nick Bowman gave Edmonton their first lead 2-1 at the 7:23 mark as he snapped one over the glove of Logan Flodell. A five-on-three power play goal for Conner McDonald put the Oil Kings up 3-1 before Tomas Soustal made it 4-1. Trey Fix-Wolansky, who had three assists in the game, scored his 31st of the season with 1:12 left in the period to make it 5-1 Oil Kings.

In the third period, the Hurricanes had a pair of power plays but could not solve Josh Dechaine. Hurricanes outshot the Oil Kings 10-8 in the third period. Hurricanes were outshot 35-27 on the night. The ‘Canes went 0/5 on the power play while Edmonton was 3/4 with the extra man.

The loss for the Hurricanes extended their losing streak to six straight games as they fall to 32-31-6-0 on the season. It also extended their road losing streak to four straight games. The ‘Canes finish the season 3-2-1-0 against the Oil Kings this year.

The Hurricanes will visit the Red Deer Rebels on Wednesday in a potential first round playoff match-up. The ‘Canes will return to the ENMAX Centre on Friday for the final regular season home game against the Medicine Hat Tigers.
