Vandervlis to Undergo Season-Ending Shoulder Surgery

Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club announced Tuesday that 19-year-old forward Ryan Vandervlis will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery.

Vandervlis, who was undrafted in the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft, was signed by the Hurricanes in 2014. The product of Red Deer, Alberta has skated in 162 regular season games in his career collecting 67 points (30g-37a) along with 70 penalty minutes. He has added 14 points (8g-6a) in 22 career post-season games.

The ‘Canes alternate captain appeared in 19 games this season for the Hurricanes registering 19 points, including a career-high 11 goals.

“It’s certainly unfortunate from a lot of different aspects. He was such a big part of our hockey club as a leader and with the experience he acquired last year in playoffs, it’s hard for him and our hockey club,” said Hurricanes General Manager Peter Anholt. “He’s had some shoulder problems over the last while that started in the playoffs last year and it’s caused him some grief throughout this year. Ultimately, the decision was made to get his shoulder fixed now so he can be prepared for next year.”

“This is the right move; it’s one of those things you try not to do, but it seems it was inevitable. With getting it done now, that will give him time in the summer to prepare and be ready for the start of training camp,” added Anholt.

The Hurricanes return to action on Wednesday when they welcome the Red Deer Rebels at the ENMAX Centre at 7:00pm before playing their final home game before Christmas on Friday against the Edmonton Oil Kings. Tickets for both games are available online, by calling 403-329-SEAT (7328) or by visiting the ENMAX Centre Ticket Centre.
