Cozens, Addison Combine for 11 Points as Hurricanes Blast Wheat Kings 8-4

Brandon, MB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes continued their four-game East Division road trip on Friday with a 8-4 win in Brandon against the Wheat Kings at Westoba Place.

It was a great first period for the Hurricanes who led the Wheat Kings 3-1 after twenty minutes of play. Jake Elmer struck on the opening shift as he snapped home his 11th of the season just 38 seconds into the contest; Dylan Cozens and Taylor Ross picked up the helpers on the goal. Brandon equalized at the 2:12 mark as Lethbridge-product Ridly Greig potted his fourth of the season to make it 1-1. Lethbridge restored their lead as Jordy Bellerive rifled home his 10th of the season to make it 2-1 ‘Canes at the 8:13 mark; Brandon-product Calen Addison and Nolan Jones earned the assists. Cozens potted his 10th of the season with a four-on-three power play goal at the 18:04 mark; Igor Merezhko and Bellerive picked up the assists as the ‘Canes led by two after one period. Hurricanes doubled the Wheat Kings in shots 16-8 in the first period.

The Wheat Kings replaced starting goaltender Jiri Patera with Ethan Kruger to start the second period. The ‘Canes got to Kruger nearly immediately as Cozens potted his second goal of the game at the 4:06 mark on a power play to make it 4-1 Lethbridge; Addison and Bellerive earned the assists on the goal. Brandon answered with a power play goal of their own as Stelio Mattheos banked home his 20th of the season off of Koletrane Wilson to make it 4-2. The ‘Canes struck again on the power play as Ty Kolle roofed home his sixth of the season at the 8:08 mark on a pass from Addison to make it 5-2; Cozens earned the second assist on the goal as the Hurricanes led by three after two periods. The ‘Canes outshot the Wheat Kings 20-12 in the middle frame.

In the third period, the Wheat Kings scored just 3:30 into the final frame to pull to within two as Connor Gutenberg had a puck redirect off him and into the net to make it a 5-3 hockey game. The ‘Canes pulled back ahead as Cozens completed his third career hat-trick at the 9:53 mark; Elmer and Addison picked up the assists. The ‘Canes added another power play goal as Kolle ripped home his second of the night at the 16:03 mark to make it 7-3; Cozens and Addison the assists on the game. The teams traded power play goals in the final three minutes as Mattheos scored his second of the night before Zach Cox rounded out the scoring with his eighth of the season with three second left en route to an 8-4 win.

Shots in the third period favoured the Wheat Kings 14-9, but the ‘Canes had the edge in the game 45-34 in the game. Hurricanes went 5/6 on the power play and 2/4 on the penalty kill.

The win for the Hurricanes improves their record to 11-8-2-2 on the season and 2-1-0-0 on this four-game road trip. The ‘Canes are now 5-4-2-0 on the road this season with the victory.
