Hurricanes Beat Raiders in Comeback Win

Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes began a three-game homestand on Saturday with a 5-3 win over the Prince Albert Raiders at the ENMAX Centre.

It was the first time in 623 days that the ‘Canes and Raiders met dating back to February 8th, 2020. Lethbridge has a great start as they controlled the first few minutes of the game and they were rewarded with an early goal as Alex Thacker banged home a rebound for his second of the season just 2:13 into the contest to make it 1-0 Lethbridge; Ty Nash and Logan Barlage earned the helpers on the goal. Prince Albert tied the game with a power play goal when Evan Herman popped home a loose puck to make it 1-1. Herman struck again while four-on-four at the to give the Raiders a 2-1 advantage. The ‘Canes equalized late in the period as Noah Boyko ripped home his fourth of the season on a power play to make it a 2-2 game; Nash and Justin Hall earned the assists on the game-tying goal. Raiders held the lead in shots 9-7 in the first period.

It was a tight-checking second period that saw a lot of neutral zone play. The ‘Canes had a four-on-three power play midway through the frame and Tikhon Chaika made a pair of key saves on Alex Cotton to keep the game tied 2-2. Prince Albert pulled ahead with a late period goal when Tyson Laventure was sprung free on a breakaway by Lethbridge product Michael Horon and Laventure made no mistake beating Jared Picklyk over the glove to make it 3-2 Raiders after forty minutes of play. Prince Albert outshot Lethbridge 10-8 in the second period.

The ‘Canes pressed in the third period outshooting Prince Albert 14-12 in the frame. Lethbridge pulled even with a five-on-three power play goal with 5:21 remaining in the game when Yegor Klavdiev buried a one-timer for his fourth of the season to make it a 3-3 game; Cotton and Thacker earned the helpers. Just over four-minutes later the ‘Canes pulled ahead on a give-and-go play when Thacker popped home his second of the game to make it 4-3 before Justin Hall made it a 5-3 final with an empty-net tally.

Lethbridge was outshot by Prince Albert 31-29 in the game. The ‘Canes went 3/7 with the power play while the Raiders were 1/5 with the extra man.

The win for the Hurricanes ended a two-game losing streak as they improved to 3-1-0-0 at home this season. The ‘Canes improved to 4-3-0-0 on the season with the win. The win was also Picklyk’s first WHL victory as he made 29-saves in the win.

Lethbridge will continue their three-game homestand next Friday when they welcome the Saskatoon Blades to the ENMAX Centre at 7:00pm.
