Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes honoured the 1997 Championship team Saturday night and the current edition of the ‘Canes continued their roll earning a 3-0 victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors in front of 4,447 at the ENMAX Centre.
The Hurricanes and Warriors played a very even game. The Hurricanes were outshot 11-8 in the opening period but led the game 1-0 after twenty minutes of play. Tyler Wong opened the scoring at the 10:02 mark as he beat Zach Sawchenko low to the blocker side with a quick snap shot for his team-leading 38th goal of the season – Egor Babenko and Brennan Riddle picked up the assists on the goal.
There were plenty of chances in the second period for both teams. The Warriors started the second period with a power play and on that man advantage, Moose Jaw hit two goal posts while the Hurricanes’ Zane Franklin hit a post while shorthanded. The ‘Canes added two more posts in the middle frame but weren’t able to solve Sawchenko. Lethbridge outshot Moose Jaw 14-7 in the second period.
In the third, the ‘Canes and Warriors continued in the stalemate as Moose Jaw pressed outshooting Lethbridge 13-9 in the final twenty minutes. The Warriors could not beat Stuart Skinner, however, who was great making 31 saves for his second shutout of the season. The Hurricanes made it a 2-0 lead as Brennan Menell potted an empty net goal for his 10th of the season with 53 seconds left – Tanner Nagel and Jadon Joseph picked up the helpers. Moose Jaw pulled the goalie again and with a chance at the empty-net Babenko was hauled down by Brayden Burke and subsequently awarded his 17th goal of the season – Brady Pouteau and Giorgio Estephan picked up the assists to make it 3-0. On the ensuing faceoff, there was a line brawl that resulted in the entire Joseph line being ejected from the game.
The Hurricanes were outshot 13-9 in the third period but the shots were tied 31-31 overall in the game. The Hurricanes went 0/3 on the power play, but two of the opportunities came with under 30 seconds left in the game; Moose Jaw was 0/2 on the man advantage.
Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #74 Stuart Skinner – 31 saves, second shutout of season
2) Warriors – #31 Zach Sawchenko – 28 saves
3) ‘Canes – #5 Tyler Wong – 1 goal
The win for the Hurricanes extends their winning streak to seven straight and their point streak to 13 straight games. The ‘Canes improved to 31-15-4-3 on the season.
