Regina, SK – The Lethbridge Hurricanes wrapped up the unofficial first half of the season on Saturday with a convincing 6-2 win in Regina against the Pats to head into the Christmas break.
It was an even first period that saw both team’s direct 13 shots on goal. After the ‘Canes were able to kill and early penalty to Koletrane Wilson, they were awarded a power play opportunity. The ‘Canes made good on the man advantage as Taylor Ross beat Tyler Brown at the side of the net for his eighth of the season 9:43 into the game; Jordy Bellerive and Calen Addison picked up the assists on the goal. Just under five minutes later, Regina equalized as Robbie Holmes banged home a rebound passed Stuart Skinner to make it a 1-1 tie after twenty minutes of play.
The ‘Canes exploded in the second period for four goals. Jake Elmer scored his 12th of the season at the 11:45 mark as a power play had expired to put the Hurricanes ahead 2-1; Zane Franklin and Lane Zablocki picked up the helpers (first point as a Hurricane for Zablocki). Dylan Cozens netted his 10th of the season just over two minutes later as he banged home a rebound on a power play to make it 3-1. Just 1:20 later, Ryan Bowen struck for his first of the season making it 4-1; Igor Merezhko earned the lone assist on the goal. Before the period was out, the ‘Canes struck again on a power play as Ross potted his second of the night to make it 5-1 after forty minutes of play. Shots favoured the ‘Canes 15-5 in the second period and held the edge 28-18 overall in the game.
The teams traded goals in the third period as first Regina struck when Matt Bradley sniped home his team-leading 21st of the season beating Skinner high on the glove side to make it a 5-2 game. The ‘Canes added another with 5:06 left in the game as Giorgio Estephan, who broke his stick on an earlier sequence entered the play after getting a new stick from the bench, skated in on the right wing and ripped it over the glove of Max Paddock who replaced Brown for the third period as the ‘Canes made it a 6-2 final.
Hurricanes were outshot 17-9 in the third period, but held the edge 37-35 in the game. The ‘Canes went 4/7 on the power play and 4/4 on the penalty kill.

The win snapped a four game losing streak for the ‘Canes who finish the unofficial first half of the season with a 15-16-2-0 record. The ‘Canes are now 6-10-0-0 on the road this season. Hurricanes posted a 1-3-0-0 record on the four game in five night East Division road trip.
The Hurricanes are back in action on Wednesday, December 27th when they visit the Medicine Hat Tigers in the first of a home-and-home set.
