Hurricanes Drop Game 6 at Nicholas Sheran Arena; Trail Series 3-2

Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes dropped their third straight game as they fell 6-5 in Game 5 to the Calgary Hitmen at Nicholas Sheran Arena on Saturday; now trail the best-of-seven series 3-2.

The Hurricanes had a great start to the game in front of the charged up Nicholas Sheran Arena as they peppered Calgary’s netminder Jack McNaughton early in the game but could not get on the board. The Hitmen struck first for the fourth time in the series as Luke Coleman scored his third of the series on a power play to make it 1-0. Calgary’s captain Mark Kastelic returned to the line-up after missing the last two games and Kastelic scored a power play goal to make it 2-0. Lethbridge’s captain Jordy Bellerive scored his first of the series less than a minute later to cut the Calgary lead in half 2-1; Calen Addison and Alex Cotton picked up the assists on the goal as the ‘Canes trailed 2-1 after twenty minutes. Shots favoured the Hitmen 14-11.

It was a wild second period that saw the teams combine for seven goals. Calgary struck early in the middle frame as Josh Prokop potted his third of the series just 36 seconds into the period to make it a 3-1 Hitmen lead. Jake Leschyshyn and Vladislav Yeryomenko traded goals to see Calgary lead 4-2 before the ‘Canes struck twice on the power play. Nick Henry scored his third of the post-season at the 8:44 mark before Logan Barlage tied the game at 4-4 on a deflection passed McNaughton. Before the period was out, Calgary scored two more as Cael Zimmerman and Mark Kastelic made it 6-4 Hitmen at the second intermission.

In the third period, the Hurricanes struck on the power play with 4:29 left in the game as Leschyshyn scored his second of the game and fifth of the series to pull the ‘Canes to within a goal making it 6-5; Bellerive and Addison drew the assists on the goal. The Hurricanes pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker but could not generate a tying goal as Calgary hung on for the Game 5 victory.

Shots in the game favoured the Hitmen 40-34. Lethbridge went 3/8 with the power play while Calgary was 2/4 with the extra man.

2) ‘Canes – #15 Jordy Bellerive (1 goal, 2 assists)
3) Hitmen – #8 Vladislav Yeryomenko (1 goal, 1 assist)

The Hurricanes will travel to Calgary for Game 6 on Sunday afternoon at 4:00pm as they will face elimination for the first time in the post-season. The game can be seen at Browns Socialhouse in Lethbridge or heard on 106.7 ROCK.
