Hurricanes Earn Win Friday in Swift Current

Swift Current, SK – The Lethbridge Hurricanes began a stretch of seven of their next nine games on the road with a 7-2 victory against the Swift Current Broncos at the Innovation Credit Union I-Plex.

The Hurricanes, who scored five times in the first period on Wednesday, popped home four in the first against the Broncos. Jake Elmer scored his 25th goal of the season just 1:47 into the game as he snuck one by Riley Lamb to make it 1-0; Logan Barlage and Alex Cotton picked up the assists on the goal. Elmer struck again on a shorthanded breakaway from his second of the period at the 4:41 mark to make it 2-0. Lethbridge made it a 3-0 advantage when Barlage scored his 12th of the season at 6:47; Taylor Ross and Cotton drew the helpers. After the Broncos got on the board, the Hurricanes answered back as Nick Henry tucked home 21st of the year as the ‘Canes led 4-1 after twenty minutes having outshot the Broncos 16-9.

The teams traded goals in the second period as the Hurricanes added to their lead at the 7:44 mark when Noah Boyko banged home a rebound to make it 5-1; Jordy Bellerive and Calen Addison picked up the assists on the goal. Swift Current cut the lead back to three as Connor Horning outwaited Bryan Thomson, who made his third WHL start for the Hurricanes, and lifted it over his glove at the 16:01 mark to make it 5-2 Lethbridge after forty minutes. The ‘Canes outshot the Broncos 19-9 in the middle frame.

The Hurricanes added to their lead with another pair of goals in the third period. Boyko potted his second of the night and seventh of the season on another rebound at the 5:18 mark to make it a 6-2 lead; Bellerive and Dylan Cozens earned the assists on the goal. Lethbridge rounded out the scoring at the 12:43 mark as Elmer completed his second career hat-trick with a power play goal to make it a 7-2 final for the Hurricanes.

Shots in the third period favoured the Hurricanes 21-10 as they outshot the Broncos 56-28 on the night. The ‘Canes went 1/2 on the power play and a perfect 8/8 on the penalty kill.

The win for the Hurricanes was their second straight victory. Lethbridge improves to 29-16-5-5 on the season.
