Hurricanes Shutout Rebels 4-0

Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes began a brief two-game homestand on Wednesday with a 4-0 victory over the Red Deer Rebels to win their third straight game.

The Hurricanes controlled the first period outskating the Rebels early. The ‘Canes raced out to an early 7-0 shot advantage in the game. Lethbridge struck at the 8:29 mark as Egor Zudilov was able to beat Riley Lamb for his fourth of the season to make it 1-0 ‘Canes; Igor Merezhko and Brendan Stafford picked up the assists. For Stafford, it was his first WHL point on the goal. Hurricanes outshot the Rebels 9-2 in the first period.

The Hurricanes continued to outplay the Rebels early in the second period but couldn’t beat Lamb to build on their lead. The ‘Canes broke through as Ty Prefontaine pinched on a rush and snapped hit home for his third goal in three games to put Lethbridge ahead 2-0; Jordy Bellerive and Giorgio Estephan picked up the assists on the goal. Hurricanes outshot the Rebels 12-10 in the middle frame.

Lethbridge added two more goals in the third period. Koletrane Wilson buried his second goal of the season at the 10:28 mark to make it 3-0 ‘Canes; Estephan earned the lone assist on the goal. Just under four minutes later, the ‘Canes added another as Taylor Ross netted his third goal in two games slipping one through the legs of Lamb after a faceoff win by Estephan to make it 4-0 Hurricanes.

The ‘Canes outshot the Rebels 10-9 in the third period and 31-21 overall in the game. The ‘Canes were 0/2 on the power play and 4/4 on the penalty kill.

Three stars of the game were:
1) ‘Canes – #74 Stuart Skinner (21 saves, shutout)
2) ‘Canes – #6 Ty Prefontaine (1 goal)
3) ‘Canes – #15 Jordy Bellerive ( 1 assist)

The 21-saves for Skinner marks this third shutout of the season and ninth career, tying him for the Hurricanes franchise lead with Logan Koopmans.

The win for the ‘Canes was their third straight and seventh in their last eight games. It improved the Hurricanes record to 14-13-1-0 on the season and pulled them above five-hundred for the first time since November 1st.

The Hurricanes return to action on Friday when they play their final home game before the Christmas Break as they welcome the Edmonton Oil Kings at 7:00pm on Ugly Christmas Sweater night.
